While Microsoft celebrates these efficiencies, around 9,000 employees found themselves jobless in 2025—roughly 4% of the company’s global workforce. This came after 6,000 layoffs back in May. Sales, support, engineering, gaming—no department was safe. The timing seems suspicious, doesn’t it? AI takes over tasks, humans get shown the door. But don’t worry! Microsoft execs insist there’s no direct link between AI and pink slips. Sure.

The numbers tell a different story. AI now generates approximately 35% of code in some development teams. Software ships faster. Products hit the market quicker. Who needs all those human programmers? As global business adoption reaches 65% for routine task automation, the writing is on the wall.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant helped sales teams boost revenue by 9%. Those AI systems are already pulling in “tens of millions of dollars” handling smaller customer accounts. Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff reported these findings in an internal presentation highlighting the dramatic impact of AI tools. The company’s shift reflects broader industry trends as technology firms increasingly prioritize AI capabilities.

But AI doesn’t come cheap. Microsoft plans to drop a staggering $80 billion in 2025 on AI infrastructure—data centers, fancy chips, the works. Gotta spend money to make money, right? And then cut costs wherever possible to offset that spending. Human salaries make convenient targets.

The company is clearly pivoting. Traditional sales roles are disappearing, replaced by AI-focused solutions engineers. It’s a technically specialized workforce now. Can code? You’re in. Just good with people? Well…
