AI job promises? Sounds enticing, right? Well, hold on to your hats because the reality is a bit murkier. Sure, there were 16,000 AI job postings in October 2024, but let’s not get too excited. Most of those were in niche tech roles, like Machine Learning Engineers and Generative AI Engineers. Not exactly positions everyone can waltz into.

AI job postings sound promising, but most are niche roles that aren’t easily accessible for everyone.

The demand often mixes technical wizardry with strategic business know-how, which means entry-level folks might as well be trying to get into Fort Knox. Additionally, the AI job market continues to expand, reflecting a strong upward trend in job postings across various sectors.

Then there’s the uneven adoption of AI across sectors. Yes, healthcare and consulting are booming with AI, while others are still stuck in the slow lane, which puts a damper on the job promise. Personal service jobs remain largely untouched by automation, particularly in fields like hairstyling and massage therapy.

And let’s not forget the hype around generative AI supposedly creating a whole new world of creative roles. Spoiler alert: it overshadows larger workforce segments left in the dust.

On the flip side, brace yourself for some grim statistics. Up to 300 million jobs globally could vanish by 2030, leaving many workers high and dry. About 47% of US workers are facing threats of job loss or major changes due to AI, and this aligns with a projection that 92 million roles could be displaced by AI by 2030.

And let’s be real—high earners are the most worried about being replaced, which goes against the narrative that only low-skill jobs are at risk.

Routine clerical, administrative, and manufacturing roles? They’re particularly vulnerable. Bank tellers and cashiers might see employment numbers dive due to automation.

Customer service jobs? Say hello to chatbots replacing humans. The low-paid service sector is feeling the pinch, too. It’s not pretty.

But the impact of AI isn’t uniform. Industries with loads of digital data, like software development, are seeing rapid disruption.

Meanwhile, sectors like healthcare and construction lag behind. They can’t keep up with the digital data standardization that fuels AI adoption.

Younger workers worry more about job loss from AI, while older folks seem less concerned. In fact, only a tiny 3% of those without a high school diploma are at the highest risk.

While 15% of US workers might consider taking orders from AI, the skepticism about AI’s magical job creation is palpable.
